Nelson Polsby, one of the foremost American political scientists, once said about presidential debates that they are "the political version of the Indianapolis Speedway. What we're all there for- the journalists, the political pundits, the public - is to see somebody crack up in flames." This presentation will examine if presidential really have turned into big shows as Polsby suggests and how they have developed over time. By looking at the individual debates from 1960 to 2008, it will be shown how the debates have changed and what characteristics can be attributed to them.
