The US, with five times more people, surpassed France and Italy as the leading consumer of wine in 2010, and US and other New World producers are expanding as the EU reduces wine production, raising questions about whether consumers prefer Old World European wines, described as a mystery-in-every-bottle, or New World wines that are blended for consistency.
