The book of this evening is Once Upon a Quinceanera: Coming of Age in the USA byJulia Alvarez.
Julia Alvarez structures her book around one particular girl's quinceanera, which is the grand coming-of-age ceremony for Latinas turning 15. Her name is Monica Ramos and she is a Dominican-American who lives in an apartment in Queens, N.Y., close to where Alvarez spent her adolescence. Therefore, Alvarez also remembers her own coming of age, the learning of a new language and adjusting to the American way of life. She never had a quinceanera, but now, she ?nds that with a growing Latino population in the United States, this tradition helps binding Hispanics together. After all, more than 400,000 American Latinas turn 15 every year.
