"All Men Are Created Equal"- Lehrerfortbildung

12.01.2011 (15:00 - 17:00)

Dedicated to a Proposition: "All Men Are Created Equal" in American Culture
Lehrerfortbildung mit Prof. Dr. Werner Sollors
In this seminar, Prof. Sollors presents a survey of pious and irreverent uses of the Declaration of Independence in American literature and culture. One of the most decisive documents in US history is thus shown from various elucidating perspectives that help understand US culture as well as the roles that this unique proposition has played in the nation's self-fashioning narratives. An aspect of US history becomes accessible and understandable.

WErner Sollors (Dr. phil. FU Berlin 1975) is counted among the most prolific contemporary Americanists. He teaches African American Studies, English, and Comparative Literature at Harvard. Co-editor with Greil Marcus of A New Literary History of America (Harvard UP, 2009), his major publications include Beyond Ethnicity: Consent and Descent in American Literature and Culture (1986), Neither Black nor White yet Both: Thematic Explorations of Interracial Literature (1997), and Ethnic Modernism (2008). He is currently at work on a book tentatively "Tales from the 1940s"
