„An Agonistic Model of Democracy
Chantal Mouffe im DAI!
Moderation: Prof. Dr. Andreas Falke, Direktor des DAI Prof.
Dr. Chantal Mouffe, Department of Politics and International Relations, University of Westminster, UK, is best known for Hegemony and Socialist Strategy, which she co-authored with Ernesto Laclau and which is considered as central to post-Marxist political theory.
According to Mouffe, Western societies tend to favor postmodern concepts of the “Third Way” which advocate a consensual form of democracy beyond the political opposition of left and right. These concepts, however, ignore the antagonistic dimension of „the political“ and the conflicting ambivalences which are fundamental to human nature. Mouffe’s „agonistic model of democracy“ aims at amending this lack.
