The book of this evening is Water for Elephants by Sara GruenThe novel is told in fl ashback by the ninetysomething Jacob Jankowski, who is left homeless as a veterinary student at Cornwell when his parents are killed in a car accident. He climbs aboard a train that happens to be carrying the Benzini Brothers Most Spectacular Show on Earth and joins the third-rate travelling circus during the time of the Great Depression as a veterinarian. There he falls in love with Marlena, a star performer and wife of the psychotic circus boss, who beats both Marlena and the animals
