Teaching History Through Film - The Facts and Fictions of Cinematic Adaptions
This interactice presentation will try to show by example how film can be used successfully to teach and understand history. Together we shall seek to address and answer issues such as: how to distinguish fact from fiction in film, how to use media as a primary source when studying historical issues, how to awaken interest and insight into the past as seen through its cinematic representation, how to define the meaningful importance of mass, popular and history in a way which is both accessible and deep, how to clarify the fundamental relation between mass media and society both in western civilizaton in general and the USA in particular.
Dr. John Dean is Professor of American Studies & Cultural History at the University of Versailles in France. Dr. Dean has frequently given courses on U.S. Cultural Studies and given guest lectures at teacher's training workshops in Germany (Akademie für Lehrerfortbildung, Dillingen) and throughout Europe.
